“Puma at your disposal”
— Puma

The Puma is an Armored Combat Vehicle of the Chimera.

History[]

Pumas were first used by the Chimera in the wake of Belyie Volki's attack on the International Criminal Court by Colonel Schaeferto assault their camp. After successfully securing the site, Schaefer requested more for deployment in order to escort captured Belyie Volki assets. There, they served as a quick reaction force to ward off Cartel resistance. When Cartel struck back, they again proved invaluable in defense, and would continue their service in future Chimera interventions, notably in the final showdown against James T. Wittel in a joint attack force.

Gameplay[]

Puma is an excellent unit with good speed, a high fire rate but low health. Later upgrades add health, 4 transport slots and ATGMs.

Despite only slightly cheaper than the Cartel's Scorpio, Pumas are much more versatile, with their autocannons doing fair damage to both early game vehicles and exposed enemy infantry. They only cost credits, and along with their Passenger Accommodation upgrade are avaliable immediately, giving them a good boost in effectiveness. Much like a couple other lighter vehicles, Puma finds itself at home in harassing unprotected enemy supply lines and even destroying any kind of survey units as their primary weapon targets both air and ground, while anti-armor may have a hard time getting there to hit them. The ATGMs turn the tables by giving Pumas a significantly better offense, being able to deal great damage to enemy vehicles via indirect fire without sustaining much themselves. Though the FÉLIN and Exosoldier usually do not require transport, the slow SAS and Grenadier definitely appreciate its presence while it provides some additional firepower. Being the only Chimera transport vehicle that does not cost aluminum, it has its merits of saving valuable resources for other important matters.

Unfortunately, that's where the positives stop. Its very high cost can be very difficult to dismiss, as Chimera often needs credits in the early game for infrastructure, and Pumas can often drain these instead alongside the production of other important units like the FELIN and SAS, so building many could be infeasible until a sustainable credit economy is achieved. Pumas are also unusually fragile for their cost, with a measly 12 health at most that makes them vulnerable to anything anti-armor if they do connect, with the exception of lower-ranged ones like Viper, so it can be a risky investment that causes Chimera to lag behind in economy should they choose to use it, more so if harassment fails. Its strongest weapon, the ATGM, is locked behind SWORD Protocol, resulting in a high aluminum expenditure for a comparatively mediocre upgrade. They have a relatively slow rate of fire, and while they guarantee high damage, a large number of Pumas must be present and they can be outperformed by the likes of Tigre or Valor in such roles. Speaking of aerial units, Puma is at its worst against them since unlike Otomatic's guns, its engagement remains very low against them and it can't put out enough fire to shoot these down before a large amount of Pumas are destroyed. This makes them difficult to use in general once counters start popping up, but Pumas remain an essential vehicle for the Chimera at all stages of the game.
